Ultrasound Guidance in Anesthesia, AANA Journal, June 2011

چکیده
AANA Journal June 2011 Vol. 79, No. 3 209 Sonography addresses a variety of concerns, such as patient safety and comfort, cost-effectiveness, time to complete a procedure, and success rates associated with invasive anesthesia procedures. Ultrasound guidance is commonly being used for the placement of nerve blocks, placement of peripheral and central lines, and arterial catheterization. Recently, it has been applied to preprocedural and imaged-guided spinal and epidural placement. The general terms and application of ultrasound to the practice of anesthesia are discussed in this article, as well as the general principles and the interpretation of basic images. Common procedures that include its use are also reviewed.

AANA Journal June 2014 Vol. 82, No. 3 219 Fractures of the proximal upper extremity present a challenge to the anesthesia provider when administering a regional anesthetic because the dermatomal distribution of the upper extremity requires more local anesthetic coverage than any single brachial plexus nerve block can provide. A 60-year-old woman underwent intramedullary nailing of a patholo...
متن کاملUltrasound-guided interscalene-supraclavicular block for an intramedullary nailing of a pathologic humeral fracture: practical application of ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia.
Fractures of the proximal upper extremity present a challenge to the anesthesia provider when administering a regional anesthetic because the dermatomal distribution of the upper extremity requires more local anesthetic coverage than any single brachial plexus nerve block can provide. A 60-year-old woman underwent intramedullary nailing of a pathologic humeral fracture using a combination of re...
متن کاملDetection of pneumothorax with ultrasound.
Diagnosis of a pneumothorax in the perioperative area can be difficult. Traditional gold-standard modalities may not be available or feasible to institute. Ultrasound guidance allows the anesthesia provider a method of quickly ruling out this potentially life-threatening complication. In this article we detail the use of sonography for fast and accurate diagnosis of pneumothorax. The essential ...
متن کاملUltrasound-Guided Ankle Blocks: A Review of Current Practices.
Ankle blocks are routinely indicated for surgical anesthesia and postoperative analgesia of procedures involving the foot. Traditionally, ankle blocks have been performed by relying on landmark identification of nerves. The literature regarding the performance and efficacy of ankle blocks is inconsistent. This can be attributed to several variables, such as provider technique, differences in pa...
متن کاملAnesthetic considerations in patients undergoing percutaneous radiofrequency interstitial tissue ablation.
Radiofrequency (RF) interstitial tissue ablation is a new, minimally invasive procedure for patients with liver cancer who are not candidates for conventional therapy. The percutaneous RF ablation therapy involves placing a needle electrode under ultrasound guidance into a selected portion of the tumor and heating the tissue between 90 degrees C and 100 degrees C. The ablation procedure can be ...
